COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A cryptic tweet from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s wife, Connie Schultz, has set off a firestorm of speculation. Could Senator Brown be the next President of the United States? After Tuesday’s election, there’s a lot of buzz about a possible 2020 run.
Schultz tweeted Monday morning, “we’re thinking about it” with a link to an article titled, “Sherrod Brown for President?” Senator Brown confirmed in a statement Monday he is considering a Presidential run.
Central Ohio Democratic Strategist and Political Consultant Greg Haas, whose long worked with Senator Brown, said the tweet took him by surprise.
“That stunned me actually. I did not, I did not, I did not see that coming at all,” said Haas.
Monday, Senator Brown released a statement about all the Presidential hype saying that running for President has never been his dream but that quote, “this is something we’ll talk about as a family.”
Haas said Senator Brown has been on people’s radar screen nationally for years.
“He’s such a fascinating potential candidate,” he said. “He can make the kind of arguments and be the kind of candidate that a lot of Democrats are looking for and feel like we haven’t been getting in recent national elections.”
Senator Brown continued in the statement saying, “Connie and I are grateful to everyone who’s reached out to urge us to think about it, particularly since the election on Tuesday.”
Haas said he’s the blue-collar champion who could just carry himself and Ohio to the White House.
“There will be Sherrod Brown chapters popping up all over the country tomorrow,” he said.
