Investigators have identified the man killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Madison County.

According to the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 2pm on US Route 42 just north of Old US 42 in Deer Creek Township. Troopers say 63-year-old Michael M. Michael, of London, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche north on US-42 when he went left of center. The Avalanche struck a southbound 2009 Ford Escape, driven by 55-year-old David E. Flowers, also of London, head on.

A third vehicle, a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by 32-year-old Justin L. Whitehead, of Springfield, was behind Flowers’ vehicle when the crash happened. Whitehead drove to the right side of the roadway to avoid both vehicles, but his SUV was also struck by Michael’s vehicle.

Michael’s Avalanche rolled over and eventually came to rest on its side. Whitehead’s vehicle came to rest in a ditch and Flowers’ Escape came to rest on the roadway. Troopers say Flowers was pronounced dead on the scene.

Whitehead was transported to Madison Health in an unknown condition and Michael was taken by Med-Flight to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
