MINERVA PARK, OH (WCMH)–Minerva Park Police Chief Kim Nuesse says what happened in Baton Rouge and Falcon Heights could happen in any community, large or small.

“There’s no cookie-cutter situation in law-enforcement. You see things you thought you’d never see,” said Nuesse.

Chief Nuessee explains that a big part of her officers’ core training focuses on something very basic.

“We believe it’s very important for our police officers to be able to verbally communicate with citizens and people they interact with especially in a crisis. About 80 to 90 percent of what we do in our job is verbal communication with people.”

Nuesse says it’s best for officers to introduce themselves when pulling someone over and to explain why they’re there.

“I don’t leave them guessing because most people are already anxious and angry and concerned about why a police officer is stopping them.”

Nuesse says in a time when more people have a conceal carry license officers need to avoid getting distracted by this.

“We should be focusing on the person’s behavior and…not overreact to the fact that they’re carrying a firearm.”Some suggestions from police if you get pulled over:

Remain calm and compliant.

Keep your hands on the steering wheel. or at least in the officer’s sight.

Don’t go reaching for a cell phone or into a glove box.

Don’t argue about the traffic stop itself. Save that for court. What others are clicking on:
