MASSILLON, OH (WCMH) – Police in Massillon say a man accused of kidnapping and raping a 9-year-old girl was captured in Fairfield County.

According to WKYC, the girl was walking home from the library when she was approached near St. Paul’s Church. The man reportedly said he was a police officer and that she had been reported missing. The suspect transported her “a short distance” and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

She is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Police told NBC affiliate WFMJ that the girl was able to walk home.

After police circulated a picture of the suspect’s pickup truck, police say someone recognized it and identified the suspect as 46-year-old Dennis L. Menefee of Port Washington.

Menefee was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Fairfield County deputies. He is charged with rape, kidnapping, assault and aggravated menacing.

Menefee will be taken to Stark County after he is released from the Fairfield County jail.
