PHOENIX, AZ (WCMH) – An Arizona man says he was bitten by bed bugs while riding an electric cart at Walmart.

“Just riding down Walmart for a bit, my back started getting itchy,” Jose Avalos de Leon said. He told KNXV that he has a leg injury, which is why he decided to use a motorized shopping scooter.

Avalos decided to investigate the scooter, and that’s when he saw the tiny brown bugs on the seat. He and his girlfriend, Lupita Cruz, went to look for another scooter to use and found more bed bugs.

“I got of the chair, turned around and the whole chair was infested with bed bugs,” he said.

Pest expert and owner of The Works Pest Control Ian Campbell told KNXV that the bugs probably appeared on the scooters after someone who has an infestation at home came into Walmart and that anyone who sat on the scooters could have brought the pests back to their home.READ MORE: Walmart patents self-driving shopping cart system

“That person goes home and sits on their couch and instantly the bed bug tries to hide,” Campbell said. “That bed bug is going to feed on [that person] and once they feed they start laying eggs.”

Walmart released a statement regarding the incident.

“The carts have been pulled from public use, and we’re awaiting a team to arrive at the store for testing,” Walmart’s senior manager of corporate communications Charles Crowson  said in the statement.

If you’re worried about taking bed bugs home and ending up with an infestation in your house, you can take precautions.

“All the clothes you’re wearing, put them in the dryer on high heat for about an hour and a half or so,” Campbell advises.
