COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police have charged Wendell Louis Callahan with three counts of murder after a mother and her two children were stabbed to death in north Columbus.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, at about 1:19 a.m. this morning, neighbors reported a fight in one of the nearby apartments.
When officers arrived on scene, they were directed to 995 Atlantic Avenue, apartment 752, where they found 32-year-old Erveena Hammonds, 10-year-old Anaesia Green, and 7-year-old Breya Hammonds all suffering from critical injuries.
All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators told NBC4 the suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the woman who was killed. They said he killed all three people and then was surprised when the woman’s current boyfriend walked in the residence. The two men then began to fight.
Both men were injured and taken to an area hospital. Police say the boyfriend was treated and released.
10-year-old Paris Bennett says she will now treasure a best friend bracelet that Anaesia Green gave her for Christmas. The two girls were neighbors and classmates at Salem Elementary School.
“She told me ‘do not lose it and never throw it away’ and I said ‘OK’ and I made her a promise,” Bennett said.
Deantea Bennett, Paris’ mother, told NBC4 her daughter asked to sleepover at Green’s home recently. Bennett said no because she didn’t know enough about Anaesia’s mom or their living situation.
“One of the examples I used was I don’t know if they have a crazy boyfriend who might kill everybody in the house and sad to say but that’s what happens today – So I told her she couldn’t go,” Bennett said.
Natasha Hammond-Taylor, who said she was Broomfield’s sister in law says Broomfield had not previously mentioned any problems or concerns about her ex-boyfriend. “Just such a horrible thing for anybody to do to anyone especially her and her children,” Hammond-Taylor said. “They didn’t deserve that.”
