COLUMBUS (WCMH) — One man will face charges after police say he assaulted an officer and led police on a chase that ended with a crash late Monday night.

It happened around midnight  officer J. Sterling was working special duty at a Walmart store located on South High Street. Employees at the store told the officer that a man and a woman were attempting to shoplift. The two were identified as Evan Whitt and Heather Harvey.

Officer Sterling confronted Whitt who began resisting and hit the officer in the face during the struggle.

Whitt and Harvey got away on a blue motorcycle. Police pursued the two until Whitt lost control of the motorcycle near the intersection of Georgesville Road and Clime Road.

The bike was found across the intersection in nearby woods. Both Whitt and Harvey were transported to a local hospital with only minor injuries.

Once Whitt is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the Franklin County Jail. He will face charges for a felony vehicular assault and assaulting an officer.
