COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The man killed in an officer involved shooting Thursday night has been identified.
Jimmie Patton, 38, died following an officer-involved shooting in south Columbus.
It happened shortly after 8pm on the 400 block of Southwood Avenue.
Police said Patton was a suspect out of a ‘gun run.’
Columbus Police Sergeant Richard Weiner said officers received a call Thursday evening that a white male in a white vehicle was drunk and pointed a gun in the direction of the caller.
Officers arrived on scene to investigate, and saw the described vehicle in the back alley. They approached the vehicle and that is when Patton got out and pointed the gun at one of the officers. One officer fired multiple shots that hit Patton.
According to Columbus police, Patton was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition and later died from his injuries. The officers were not injured.
The incident was also reportedly all caught on surveillance video by a nearby shop.
Officers said they recovered a rifle and handgun at the scene of the incident.
This is the fourth officer-involved shooting this year.Keep checking NBC4i.com for real-time updates on this story. To get alerts for breaking news, grab the free NBC4 News App for iPhone or Android. You can also sign up for email alerts.
