COLUMBUS (WCMH)–Leon Alexander will spend 21 years in prison after allegedly robbing and trying to rape an 89-year-old woman in northeast Columbus in May.

The 45-year-old was sentenced Thursday.

Alexander allegedly forced his way into a home on Denune Avenue at 4 a.m. on May 23 and confronted the woman.

He will be labeled a Tier II sex offender for 25 years and does not have the possibility of early release.

He turned to the victim in court and said he wanted to apologize; she said she would not accept it.

Alexander was sentenced to 11 years for aggravated burglary; 10 years for repeat violent offender; 7 years for attempted kidnapping; 10 years for aggravated robbery; 6 years for felonious assault; and 11 months for possessing criminal tools. Several of the charges ran concurrent.

According to the Columbus Division of Police report, Alexander ransacked the woman’s purse, forced her into the dining room, and began removing her clothes. He was armed with a knife and a box cutter. Police say Alexander told the woman he was going to rape her. The woman began to struggle, and Alexander allegedly bit her on each arm, possibly breaking one of them. He removed his clothing and got on top of her.

Police say a neighbor called 911 after seeing movement, and officers caught Alexander as he tried to flee.
