ATHENS, OH (WCMH) — An 81-year-old man has died after troopers said he was struck by a truck while working on his vehicle.

Troopers from the Athens post said Fred Cavey, of Glouster, was stopped on the berm along U.S. 50 westbound, east of State Route 690, at about 1:40pm on Thursday. Officials believe he was working on his load in his Dodge Dakota while his 23-year-old grandson waited on the passenger side of the vehicle.

At that time, a Rumpke refuse truck headed down the road hit Cavey and the pick-up truck, which struck the grandson.

Troopers said Cavey was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The grandson was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.

Alcohol is not suspected as being involved in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
