Massive avocado shortage causing guacamole prices to soar

LOS ANGELES (WCMH) — Don’t be surprised if your favorite restaurant is out of guacamole.

A shortage of avocados is pushing avocado prices up by double, and in some cases triple, from this time last year.

The supply shortage is due to a grower’s strike in Mexico, leaving retailers struggling to find avocados and some restaurants temporarily dropping guacamole from menus.

Hormel Foods, owner of Wholly Guacamole – the nation’s top-selling branded guacamole – said in statement to CNBC it is monitoring the situation and leveraging its global supply chain to “minimize any potential business disruptions.”

According to produce experts, high prices for avocados at supermarkets could linger until after the Super Bowl, which is when the demand for guacamole soars.
