EL PASO, TX (WCMH) – A Texas woman is accused of smuggling methamphetamine worth more than $1.6 million inside of SUV tires.

According to U.S. Customs and Border protection, 50 pounds of meth was hidden inside custom made metal collars bolted to the wheels of a SUV.

The discovery was made on April 9 when a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Matilda Perez of Dallas, Texas attempted to cross the border from Mexico at the Paso Del Norte crossing in El Paso.

A drug sniffing dog alerted to narcotics in the rear of the car, according to investigators. An X-ray scan of the car then revealed an odd appearance inside of the rear tires.

Investigators found the custom made metal collars bolted to the rims of the wheels, inside of the tires. When the collars were cut open, officers discovered more than 50 pounds of meth.

Perez was arrested and will face charges related to the smuggling attempt.
