NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -The 2015 Metro-Nashville Officer of the Year was attacked Tuesday night while attempting to make an arrest in east Nashville, WKRN reports.
Metro police were called to the Cayce Homes just after 6 p.m. on reports of a fight and alleged gunfire.
After he arrived, Officer Matthew Cammarn reportedly witnessed a man assault a woman. According to police, the 22-year-old “aggressively walked up to the officer,” who told the man to put his hands behind his back.
That’s when police say the man, identified as Brian Shannon, pulled away before pulling Officer Cammarn to the ground.
As the two were fighting and Shannon swung his fists, other people in a crowd began pulling, pushing, kicking and hitting the officer in an effort to free Shannon. The incident was caught on camera and some video was posted to Facebook.
Eventually, Shannon broke free and took off running. Officer Cammarn chased after him and the 22-year-old was taken into custody one street over.
Shannon, of Meridian Street, was booked into the Metro jail charges of felony aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, evading arrest, criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and drug possession.
A 17-year-old juvenile who reportedly injured Officer Cammarn during the attack was charged with aggravated assault on the officer and evading arrest. He is being held at juvenile detention. His name will not be released due to his age.
Cammarn was named the Metro police’s 2015 Police Officer of the Year for saving the life of a 17-year-old gunshot victim on North Eighth Street. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury and released overnight.
Metro police say the man in the attached surveillance photos also kicked Cammarn.
He appears to have long braids pulled to the back of his head. He wore black clothing and the soles of his shoes appear to be green. What others are clicking on:
