COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — NBC4 has enjoyed an outpouring of volunteers at the Mid-Ohio Farm at NBC4 located right behind our studios.
On Tuesday, we welcomed juniors and seniors from Columbus Academy to our community garden. This was one of their stops as they are working toward earning their required 45 hours of service to the community.
Their teachers say it helps them expand their horizons and think of the needs of others. The students tell us it was great to get outside and get “hands-on” experience in the garden.
“It’s a really nice day and we’ve got a breeze, so it’s nice to kind of get hands-on,” said Ray Platte a Columbus Academy senior. “It’s fun picking the tomatoes, everything smells good and it’s nice to see fresh food that will go to feed families.”
It has been a big year for the Mid-Ohio Farm at NBC4. We are now in our first season of full-time production providing fresh produce for hundreds of our neighbors. Just recently we added greenhouses to grow tomatoes and cucumbers and we are harvesting 480 heads of lettuce each week. We also built a new herb garden.
