BUTLER CO., Ohio (WCMH/AP)– Ginger Weaver was among the hundreds of families that raced to Madison High School in Butler County after investigators say James Austin Hancock brought a gun to lunch and began shooting.

Hancock allegedly shot two students on Monday during lunch, and two other were injured.

Weaver’s son, 14-year-old Brant Murray, was one of those students. He was hit by shrapnel.

“I was actually scrubbed in, because I work in surgery and they came and got me and said there was a shooting at my son’s school,” Weaver said.

“I got almost all the way up here in traffic and they called me, the principal did on his cell phon,e to let me know my son was one of the students injured.”

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said none of the injuries were life-threatening. Hancock was charged preliminarily with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, inducing panic and making terrorist threats, Jones said.

He was apprehended after allegedly running from the school.

Weaver said her son was sitting at lunch, right next to the suspect, when chaos broke out.

“He was actually sitting at the (same) table (as) all the boys that were shot. And they were sitting there eating lunch cause they’re round tables, and boy that did the shooting was at the table sitting next to them. Said he got up and started shooting, pointed the gun and opened fire on their table.”

Ginger, who has three other children at Madison, caught up with her injured son at Atrium Medical Center in nearby Middletown.

“On the right side, his thighs and calves have shrapnel in it. He has to see a surgeon about possible surgery to remove them.”

Ginger says the events of today are just beginning to sink, especially for Brant–a young man many parents are calling a hero.

“The children said Brant actually knocked them to the ground to get them out of the way when the gunfire started going off.”

Ginger says their community will get past this, through prayer and fellowship. She applauds the school district’s quick response.

“This is nothing you can ever prepared for so you just do the best you can,” she said. “They were great about it.”

Madison Local Schools are closed Tuesday. Counselors will be on hand Wednesday when students here come back to class.

The campus is near Middletown, roughly 30 miles north of Cincinnati. State records show enrollment of about 250 junior high and 500 high school students.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican running for president, said on a campaign stop in Vermont he’d been briefed but didn’t give details.

“Obviously it was a tragedy, but thank God that no life was lost,” Kasich said.
