MARSVILLE, WA (WCMH) — A woman says she was taken advantage of in a GoFundMe scam that had been set up for her sick child.

Laura Leingang tells KIRO-TV that her son, Lucas, was born with a congenital heart condition. She turned to an online parenting group for comfort.

Two other members of that group offered to set up a GoFundMe account to help her pay for her son’s lifesaving heart surgery.

“I was like ‘OK, that’s fine,’” said Leingang.

But when Leingang tried to get the nearly $2000 collected to pay the bills, she noticed the GoFundMe account was empty. Upon investigation, GoFundMe’s fraud department said all the money went to one of the women who set up the account.

“Jennifer was listed as the beneficiary for all of the money,” Leingang said.

KIRO-TV also looked into the claims and discovered the women who had set up the account had served time in other state for fraud. Leingang has reported them both to the FBI.

“To pick on people who are going through something… It takes a pretty special breed of evil,” said Leingang.
