MORROW COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) – A local school district is suing the Obama Administration over its directive to let students use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.
The Highland Local School District in Morrow County is the first to file a lawsuit on this issue in Ohio, but they’re among several others in the nation who are fighting against the directive.
The district is also accused of sex-based discrimination against a transgender student attending their elementary school. The student identifies as female, but is biologically male.
The district faces an unresolved civil rights complaint, filed by the family of the student because it refuses to allow her to use the girl’s bathroom. According to the lawsuit, the district said it has made other accommodations for the girl, like allowing her to use individual staff restrooms.
Some people we talked with in Morrow County said they agree with the school district’s actions.
“I feel bad for her and I don’t want anybody to not feel like they’re equal because everybody is equal, everybody is their own person and everybody should be an individual,” said Lori Edgell. “But, I don’t think that individualism should be pressed on everybody. I don’t think it should overtake the rights of everybody.”
Friday, the student’s family declined to speak to us on camera.
Besides the Highland Local School District, officials from Texas and ten other states have filed similar lawsuits. What others are clicking on:
