MT. VERNON, OH (WCMH) —  Nearly all branches of the military were represented at the Bookdale Assisted Living Facility in Mount Vernon.

Some uniforms didn’t fit the same, and some of our vets needed a little help getting around, but that was more than enough for them to be recognized.

“Because of what you’ve done and your legacy the armed forces are in great shape today,” said Brigadier General Gregory Schmulo.

Each veteran, regardless of rank or service time, received a veteran’s pin. Among those honored was Rear Admiral Edward “Whitey” Feightner, a flying ace, flying cross recipient and is the only surviving member of the original Blue Angels.

“I’m no hero. I’m a survivor, not a hero, and we had a good airplane that could take a lot of damage and still fly. I owe my life to Grunman aircraft. There’s just no question I should not have come home. I’ve come home several times with more than 75 bullet holes in the airplane,” said Feightner, who turns 97 this fall. What others are clicking on:
