COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–You’ve heard of the famous dogsled race called the Iditarod, in Alaska.

But what about the Ikidarod?

That’s the name for a fun student project at The Wellington School, a culmination of a yearlong study of the big race. Students in 1st-4th grade did their own “dog sled” race in the snow on Thursday.

The children experienced being a musher, lead dog, swing dog, team dog, and wheel dog. They even stopped at checkpoints, just like at the actual Iditarod.

At the checkpoints, the students got food and water, were checked out by “veterinarians,” and got to answer questions and solve basic math problems. They worked on building teamwork, too, as the sleds slid across melting snow.

Head of School Robert Brisk said several Wellington teachers traveled to Alaska last summer to learn more about the race.

“The best learning is active learning,” he said, “and we’re delighted when our teachers and students share their passions together in ways that expand their knowledge and their horizons.”

The students also made dog blankets and sent them to an Alaskan musher, who will use them for the dogs.
