NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH) – The 15-year-old Newark girl who is battling her second bout with ovarian cancer is now home from the hospital and recovering.

Emily Ball had surgery Wednesday, February 2nd to remove a tumor larger than a grapefruit from near her right ovary. When she was eight, she lost her left ovary and Fallopian tube to the disease.

A special Emily’s Entourage Facebook community was formed around Emily the weekend before her surgery. She said it feels like each member is sending a prayer.

Her mom and aunt created the community to update friends, family and the community on her status. The pictures Emily let them post were some of the first times she’d let anyone see her new bald head without a cap or cover.

It just helps knowing that people are thinking about you,” says Emily.

“Some of the people are like from different states even, but it feels like they’re right there with you,.”

It’s an extremely rare germ cell tumor, only found in 2 to 3 children per million per year.

Emily’s still got three more chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She lost her right Fallopian tube to this last surgery, but she got to keep her ovary, although she doesn’t know the impact chemo will make. Either way, her mom says she still has options for having her own family down the road.

“She’s pretty amazing. She’s definitely my hero,” says Emily’s mom Veronica Rine.

Emily says she’ll do whatever she needs to do to get back to a healthy, happy life. She says each new Facebook follower lets her know that somebody cares.

“It’s kind of a relief to have people who understand what you’re going through to talk to,” she says.
