COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)-No charges have been filed after an airplane was forced to land in Columbus on Thursday because of an alleged unruly passenger.
David Whitaker, Port Columbus spokesperson, said the FBI arrived and questioned two passengers before turning them over to Port Columbus Airport Police.
Airport police released both passengers and did not charge either one.
There is a possibility that the two passengers may face a civil penalty (a fine) at a later point.
The plane was diverted to Port Columbus airport Thursday after that passenger made threatening remarks, according to an airport spokesperson.
It was an abrupt landing for the 49 passengers on board….a rapid descent triggered by the threatening comments of female passenger.
“She was making threats about technology and the plane and it blowing up,” said Pete West, who was on the plane. “And there were a lot of stories going around, but it was pretty scary.”
According to the spokesperson, the plane was isolated after landing and police were called to the scene. The flight, United 3342, was headed to Washington D.C. from St. Louis.
Passengers say the woman started the flight sitting in the back of the plane. One passenger told NBC4 he was sitting next to the woman and that she was jittery, suspicious and asking a lot of questions.
The flight attendants moved the woman to the front of the plane, passengers say. And about 30 minutes later, the decision was made to divert the plane to Columbus. Passengers say they got very little information from flight attendants.
West said the plane landed very suddenly.
“All of a sudden I was told to put my tray up and my computer away and we were only about half way through the flight and then we just took a nose dive right toward the ground and did a really quick landing and I look around and I go…’this isn’t Dulles Airport,'” he said.
Austin Dowdy, another passenger, said a flight attendant told him it would be a while before the plane took back off–and, indeed, it was five hours after that emergency landing.
“She was like, ‘you know, there’s been a problem here and we take issues pretty seriously on this airline,’ so, she said, ‘it’s going to be a while, we’re going to investigate this.'”
Law enforcement officials brought K9s to the scene to help investigate but none hit on any luggage or passengers, said David Whitaker, Port Columbus spokesperson.
A female passenger was detained and the rest of the passengers were evacuated from the plane and later taken to a safe location.
The airport remained open during the incident and all runaways have since been reopened.
