COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Beginning Monday, new FDA regulations will bring many changes to tobacco and tobacco-related products. Most notably, it is now federal law that tobacco-related products such as e-cigarettes, vaping devices and hookah cannot be purchased by anyone under 18. According to the FDA, three million high school and middle school student were using e-cigarettes in 2015.

Other regulations include more explicit warning on tobacco products and the elimination of all free tobacco samples.

Many studies have shown vaping and e-cigarettes to be less harmful than traditional smoking. Many use the vapor-based products to quit using traditional tobacco.

“Vaping has helped people quit smoking,” says Eddie Mohamed, manager of Tobacco Discounters in Clintonville. “There’s no tar, no additives, no smoke.”

Christina McDuffie is one of Mohamed’s customers and has been using vaping products as a way to stop smoking cigarettes.

“I think vaping is healthier. It doesn’t have all the pollutants in it,” says McDuffie, who added that vaping doesn’t leave a smell such as traditional cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes and vaping are available in many different flavors and each flavor must now be regulated by the FDA, just as if they were a different type of cigarette. This will costs more money to the vaping and e-cigarette manufactures, meaning it’s possible those costs trickle down to the consumers of these products.
