COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A non-profit organization made up of nearly 600 New York Police Department officers will honor the life of slain Columbus Police Officer Steven Smith.

The Brotherhood for the Fallen sends at least two uniformed members to the funerals of every police officer killed in the line of duty. In addition to paying their respects, the attendees also make a financial contribution to the fallen officers’ families.

“The thing is, it could happen to any one of us, at any time,” said Lt. Rob Corbett, president of the Brotherhood for the Fallen’s New York chapter. “It’s a tragedy.”

According to Corbett, the Brotherhood for the Fallen was formed in Chicago. The New York chapter began shortly after two NYPD officers were shot and killed in 2014 while sitting in their cruiser.

Corbett said he hopes the gesture will send a message to Officer Smith’s family, the Columbus Division of Police and the entire city.

“I’d just like them to remember that they’re not alone,” he said. “We’re here for them. We’re going to stand with them at the services for Officer Smith.”

According to the NYPD, two members of the department’s ceremonial unit will also attend Smith’s funeral.What others are clicking on:
