CENTRAL OHIO (WCMH) — The first big snowfall of the year will have crews working day and night to keep roadways clear.

ODOT said there are 100 of their snow plows out on duty tonight until at least 11 p.m through Central Ohio (Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway and Union Counties). They are patrolling, plowing and salting interstates, state and U.S. routes.

“We’ll be out all night looking for any re-freeze, anything that didn’t get plowed off the road or any kind of precipitation that comes over night,” said ODOT transportation manager Marques Evans.

Crews are salting ramps and bridges to prevent re-freezing, as temperatures as expected to drop tonight.

Evans also said they’ve been pre-treating the roads with not only salt brine, but beet juice.

“Beet juice is something that we use to not be so harsh on our bridges, not be so harsh on the road and to the motoring public, it helps vehicles last a bit longer than the corrosive salt,” he said. “the little white lines you see down the road — that’s us pre-treating.”

Main roads with the heaviest traffic come first, followed by less busy cross streets and then residential areas, which could use assistance from its residents.

In Columbus, it is in violation of city code not to shovel your driveways and sidewalks. It is also a violation to throw snow onto the roads.
