Ohio Aviators come up short of championship in final weekend

OBETZ, OH (WCMH) — Ohio’s rugby team’s successful inaugural season came up just short as the PRO Rugby club could not score enough points in the league’s final weekend.

The Ohio Aviators defeated the Denver Stampede 32-25 in the de facto championship match held Sunday at Obetz Memorial Park, but the league’s rules prevented the club from hoisting the trophy at the end of the day.

The 29-man Ohio squad finished second in the five-team league in points, falling one shy of the Stampede. According to PRO Rugby rules, the Aviators could have tied for the championship by winning by eight or more points.

The Aviators finish 2016 play with a 9-3 record.
