NEWCOMERSTOWN, OH (WCMH) – An Ohio man is accused of using a hammer to beat his mother to death and seriously injure his sister.

It happened Friday afternoon at a home on Nugent Street in Newcomerstown.

Police were called to the home shortly after 1pm on July 22. Cynthia M. Smith, 32 called 911 to report that her brother, Charles A. Plants, 30, hit her in the face as she was getting out of the bathroom.

“I was getting out of the shower and I opened the bathroom door and he was out there going nuts,” Smith told the 911 dispatcher.

When police arrived, they found Smith lying on the bathroom floor with serious injuries. She was taken to an area hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Police also found the body of Smith’s mother, 53-year-old Jane A. Davis in the home.

Plants was arrested after a short foot chase through a cornfield.

Police found a hammer that investigators believe Plants used to kill his mother and assault his sister.

Police have not released a motive.

Plants is being held on a probation violation from an unrelated case.

According to court records, Plants has a history of drug and domestic violence related charges. He was on probation following a conviction for illegal conveyance of drugs onto the grounds of a detention facility.
