CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) – The United States Supreme Court ruling overturning the ban on same-sex marriages has been an amazing day for some and a major setback for others.

NBC4 talked with those locally who oppose the US Supreme Court ruling.

It was not hard to find groups and neighbors who were shocked and upset by the ruling… one told me our country has abandoned God.

Pastor Tim Throckmorton is a board member of a group of churches opposed to same-sex marriages. They call themselves “Citizens for Community Values in Ohio” and Awake 88. Both are part of “Focus on the Family.”

“I think that we as a nation with this ruling have been taken to place we have never been. In fact I think we are as far away from our founders as we have ever been in the nation,” said Pastor Throckmorton, of Crossroad Church in Circleville.

The pastor said their group believes same-sex marriages are against God’s teachings — but said they believe in church and love.

NBC4: “How can you talk of church and love, but on the same hand say same-sex couples can’t get married?

Pastor: “How can I speak that in love? I can speak that in love because the Bible says that is not what a marriage is.”

The group has churches and disciples in all 88 counties.

NBC4: “Is it just to deny a segment of our society the same rights as you have just because of their sexual orientation?”

Pastor:  “I can speak specifically the biblical definition of marriage, I think that is what I am called to speak to. The bible clearly defines a marriage as one man and one woman.”

“The groups flyer said same sex-marriage is being presented as being about love, relationships and civil rights but is primarily about morality.” When asked about that, Throckmorton deferred to the bible.

“We love them however, regardless of the issue if it is something the Bible speaks to we defer to the truth of scripture.”
