COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Ohio Department of Education released school report cards Thursday, assigning grades from A though F for a list of performance components.

The school districts receive grades in the following categories: Achievement, Gap Closing, K-3 Literacy, Progress, Graduation Rate, and Prepared for Success. Click here for more information on each of these components.

Columbus City Schools received an F in every category except K-3 Literacy, where the district received a D.

State superintendent Paolo DeMaria says district report cards released Thursday show more first-time test takers in 2017 than in 2016 scored proficient or higher in every subject area.

But DeMaria says families should judge their schools by more than report cards because they don’t measure teacher engagement, arts offerings and more.

The percentage of students testing proficient fell for only two tests; 5th grade math and high school history.

Public schools’ overall performance index rose nearly 2.5 points, and graduation rates improved.

The state says educators and students are continuing to adjust to new tests, higher achievement targets and more challenging expectations.

Districts won’t face consequences for poor report cards until 2018.

CCS sent home a letter to parents saying the grades use a “narrow range of data” and suggested parents visit MoreToTheScore.info for a different perspective.

Dublin City Schools and Hilliard City Schools also received multiple failing grades in different categories and expressed their disagreement with the findings in statements to NBC4.

Hilliard says they won’t “teach to the test,” an apparent reference to the statewide testing that much of the statewide grades are based on.

Dublin pointed out that 98.9 percent of their third graders meet the school’s reading requirements, yet they still received a ‘C’ in that area. They also added, “We’re interested in great thinkers, not great test takers.”

Chris Woolard, Senior Executive Director of Ohio’s Department of Education, says the standards are growing for Ohio schools.

“It’s not about trying to punish a school,” Woolard says. “It’s about saying, ‘Look, these things are important. We want to make sure these are things students are achieving.”
