COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio State women’s basketball team opened its NCAA tournament run with an 80-57 win over Maine to advance to the second round.

Jacy Sheldon led four different players that scored in double figures for the Buckeyes, scoring 19 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Taylor Thierry scored 14 while Celeste Taylor added 12 points with six rebounds. OSU forced 19 turnovers, including 12 steals.

“I think overall we had some really good moments. We looked more like ourselves in terms of our intensity, focus, and just how hard we were playing. So I thought we had great moments today,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “I wish we could have sustained that for longer stretches. I thought we got a little sloppy down there in the stretch in the second half.”

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the second-seeded Buckeyes and marked Ohio State’s first victory since defeating Michigan on Feb. 28, which clinched the Big Ten regular season title.

“It’s big for us. I think we’ve done a good job all season in the Big Ten regular season especially focusing on the game in front of us and the next game,” Sheldon said. “That’s what we’re going to continue to do. We’ll stay and watch this game. Same thing, be prepared and just focused on our next match-up.”

The Buckeyes will host Duke on Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena. Tip-off time is set for noon.
