COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A man was shot by a Columbus police officer who was responding to a domestic violence call at the Wellington Way Apartments Wednesday evening.

It happened around 10:30pm on Shoupmill Drive in Columbus.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, neighbors told responding officers a man was arguing with this mother and could be seen holding a knife.

Police say the suspect, Joseph Delay, 35, was holding at least three steak knives and behaving erratically.

Officers ordered him to drop the knives, and he refused. The officers then deployed their tasers once, but they failed to stop Delay.

According to police, he charged the officers and was then shot by an officer who is a 9-year-veteran of the department.

Witnesses on scene and a cellphone video verify the officer accounts.

The suspect was taken to Grant Medical Center in serious but stable condition. He will be charged with two counts of felonious assault on an officer.
