FREDERICK COUNTY, MD (WCMH) —  A sign meant to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse has a lot of parents outraged.

“I was the type of parent who would ask where are you at, what are you doing, who are you going to be with, what time are you going to be home. I was that type of parent. I didn’t raise my son to become an addict,” Gina Carbaugh, whose son died from heroin, told WJLA.

However, the billboard reads “Addiction is preventable. Parenting is prevention.”

“I think this billboard is a shame,” Carbaugh said.

Carbaugh has now started a petition to have the billboard removed.

The Frederick County Health Department says the billboard was already scheduled to be brought down Tuesday, but that they never meant to cause any pain with the message.

“This could have been avoided had they contacted advocates to make sure that the message wasn’t going to be harmful,” said Carin Miller, who had a son in recovery. “It’s creating stigma and the uneducated may think that it is the family’s or the parent’s fault,” said Miller.What others are clicking on:
