DAYTON, OH (WCMH) – The pastor of St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton has died after being shot during Sunday morning service, and investigators believe his brother was the gunman.

Rev. William Schooler

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the pastor as William Schooler, 70, of Dayton.

“We’re just in shock,” said Patricia Napier-Wright, Schooler’s niece. “We could not have seen this coming.”

Witnesses told WDTN-TV said they were in the church just after 12:30pm Sunday and the choir was singing. They said the pastor had just walked back to the pulpit when the brother of the pastor, who was seated in a pew, got up and followed him to the pulpit. Witnesses said that’s when they heard a couple shots fired.

Witness said there were more than 20 people inside the church at the time. They told reporters it was a scene of chaos, and everyone took off running after hearing the gunshots.

“I cannot wrap my head around this,” said Vonetta McGraw, a church member. “It’s like it’s in the movies. I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe that my pastor is gone.”

Police took the shooter out of the church in handcuffs and placed him in the back of a cruiser. Officers believe Schooler’s brother, Daniel Gregory Schooler, may have been the shooter. He has been arrested in connection with the shooting and is currently booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Charges have not been formally pressed.

“I love both of my uncles,” said Tina Schooler, the niece of both men. “I love both of them, no matter what. I love both of them and we stick together. We’re a family and we’ll stick together.”

Homicide detectives were called to the scene along with the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Police are also interviewing several witnesses.
