ALBERTA, Canada (WCMH)–Air Canada will reimburse the organizers of the Northern Alberta Lobster Festival after 100 live lobsters got lost in transit.
CBC News reports that the airline’s tracking system said the crustaceans arrived Aug. 13 at the Grande Prairie airport–the day of the festival.
But, when the organizers arrived to pick up the lobsters, they weren’t there. Severe weather had grounded the flight in Toronto.
Jackie Panasiuk, one of the festival’s organizers, told CBC she spent hours on the phone trying to get the festival’s main event there on time.
“We had people come from all over Alberta, and unfortunately the lobster weren’t among the attendees,” she said.
“It was a very disappointing event. We ate hot dogs at a lobster fest.”
The lobsters turned up at the Edmonton airport two hours later. Air Canada suggested that the festival organizers pay for a taxi to get them up to the right place.
Panasiuk said it would have been $750 just to get a taxi to the Grande Prairie airport–the actual festival was 175 kilometers (109 miles) away from Grande Prairie.
By the time the lobsters got to the festival at 10 a.m. the next day, many of them had spoiled. The lobsters were quickly cooked and delivered to the remaining guests.
Jane Warrick, Panasiuk’s sister, told the Edmonton Journal she spent more than $3,000 out of pocket and was in the process of refunding ticket money from the event.
She also said she will not be organizing another lobster festival.
