POWELL, OH (WCMH) — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the arrival of a new okapi calf.
According to the zoo, Miliki gave birth to the calf May 7 at 10:47pm.
Miliki is an experienced mother, says the zoo, and she and the calf are doing well, but don’t expect to see them on display any time soon.
The zoo says okapi calves cannot control their own body temperature for 60 days, so the newborn will need to stay in a controlled indoor environment until that time.
Okapi are most closely related to the giraffe and are only found in the forests of the Congo. They are listed as an endangered species by the IUCN Red List.
The zoo did not release the sex of the baby okapi but staff continues to monitor both mother and calf.What others are clicking on:
