LOUISVILLE (WCMH/AP)–Colorful hats, suits, and sundresses are staples at the Kentucky Derby, and this year’s group of spectators didn’t disappoint.

The 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for around 6:40 p.m. Saturday at Churchill Downs.

A huge crowd was gathered at the famed track for a full day of racing. Fans basked in breezy temperatures expected to reach the low 80s but kept their eyes skyward. Forecasters said there was a chance of thunderstorms around race time.

Undefeated horse Nyquist heads into the Run for the Roses on Saturday at Churchill Downs as the 2-1 favorite in a full field of 20 horses. NHL officials brought the Stanley Cup trophy to Nyquist’s barn for good luck on Saturday morning.

The horse is named for Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist, a player Nyquist owner J. Paul Reddam admires but has not yet met. Reddam, who grew up in Windsor, Ontario, is a Red Wings fan.

Nyquist trainer Doug O’Neill stood by his unbeaten horse and they posed with the Stanley Cup. At one point, Nyquist stuck his nose into the cup.
