PICKERINGTON, OH (WCMH) — Dozens of students at Pickerington Central High School thought they would have to cancel their plans for prom this year, as too many tickets were sold and the planned venue in Gahanna was not going to be able to accommodate.

Numbers were based off of attendance from last year’s prom, from where principal Stacy Tenenbaum says around 500 students attended.

Students will be able to attend prom now, after a new venue was found to host the dance.

According to the school district, the prom will now be held at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, and will accommodate all juniors and seniors.

The story aired on NBC4 on Wednesday and Sherry Sorrell, a catering manager and wedding specialist at Cherry Valley Lodge, called the principal the next day.

“Watching NBC4 last night, we just felt so badly for the children there, knowing they needed a place to go,” she said.

Sorrell said while on the phone, she could tell the school was very excited and relieved.

“She said she saw it on the news and it broke her heart for the students,” Tenenbaum said. “She was willing to do whatever she could to help us get it fixed.”

Seniors are looking forward to Saturday.

“Everybody’s happy now,” said Ralen Cleveland. “There’s no negativity, we’re all good. Seniors are really happy, juniors are really happy.”

“I’m really looking forward to spending prom with my friends,” added Gabriella Carr. “I’m glad everything was resolved.”

Students say they’re excited, and looking forward to being with friends and having a good time.

Principal Tenenbaum adds that Creekside Conference and Event Center will cater the afterprom party scheduled at the high school following prom. Creekside was the original location for the dance.

Gabriella Carr, “Prom is a lot about the memories,” Carr said. “It’s not just for the students, it’s also for the parents. Parents want to be able to see their kids, these juniors and seniors dressed up, be beautiful, have fun.”

This year’s theme is a Moonlight Masquerade.

Sherry says when she first heard the story on NBC4, she thought of her own child.

“I basically thought of my son, when he graduated as well. And, you know, it’s something that they work very very hard for and it means a lot to them and they can look back on this time and say someone stepped in to help us out and we got the night to remember.”

Students at the high school are glad they can enjoy prom after spending money on dresses, tuxes, flowers and limos.

Ralen Cleveland, “(It) makes me feel really good that we got the word out, seniors got what we wanted and everyone’s happy,” Cleveland said.

“I just also want to thank you guys so much for getting our story out there because without that story getting out there, we would’ve have never been able to get the exposure that it did,” Carr said.

Cherry Valley Lodge is excited to host the students for prom on Saturday adding the students are ending one chapter and starting a new chapter in their lives, they didn’t want them to be disappointed with the chapter they just finished.
