COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–Governor John Kasich has signed a bill into law that will strip Planned Parenthood of more than $1 million in state funding.

The organization says that money was used to lower the cost of things such as mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.

The new law was centered squarely on the issue of abortion. Tax dollars are only used to lower the cost of abortions when the life of a mother is endangered and instances of rape or incest according to the ACLU.  Moving forward, no organization in Ohio offering elective abortions will be able to access any state money for any healthcare services they might provide.

Proponents of the new law say about $1,3000,000 will now be absorbed by other health organizations in Ohio.

Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis says, “By their own admission, Planned Parenthood only sees 60-70,000 women a year. We live in a state of 11.9 million people. They see very few people, but receive 90-95 percent of the health dollars in this case.

Critics say taking money from Planned Parenthood and divvying it up in smaller chunks will be less effective.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Communications Director Gabriel Mann explains, “If you take the $1.3 million away from Planned Parenthood and you break it up amongst hundreds of potential other providers, you are spreading those funds so thin that they will fail to do any good anywhere else.”

Mann says the new law also stops county and city health departments from working with Planned Parenthood on issues like infant mortality.

“When Planned Parenthood has a program that goes into certain communities, maybe it went into certain colleges or worked with a county or city, that program will no longer be available,” he said.

It will require new organizations to step forward and offer these services, filling the gap. Advocates like Gonidakis say this law will ultimately better serve Ohio women.

“Over the past five years, Governor John Kasich has signed 17 pro-life laws and the sun has risen the next day,” he said. “The complaints you are hearing from Planned Parenthood are typical complaints of a corporation when they lose public funding. They are going to claim the sky is falling and the world is coming to an end, which of course it is not.”
