Police: 1 killed after crashing into pole while fleeing traffic stop

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police say one person was killed in a crash on East Main Street in Columbus after the driver refused to stop for police.

According to Columbus police,


Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputies initially attempted to stop the vehicle on Livingston Avenue at Woodcrest Road for a traffic offense. The driver did not stop, and fled the area. The vehicle fled through Reynoldsburg, where it was involved in a non-injury accident, and continued through Whitehall and Columbus.

Whitehall Police were not able to stop the vehicle with road spikes. Police say the vehicle continued to flee and made its way to E. Main Street and Napoleon Avenue, where Columbus Police attempted to deploy road spikes. The suspect vehicle swerved to avoid the spikes, losing control and striking a utility pole at E. Main Street and S. Weyant Avenue at approximately 2:57am.

Driver Emanuel McCallum, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 23-year-old Lahuntaquan Thomas, was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition.Keep checking NBC4i.com for real-time updates on this story.
