COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A boy is dead after police said he fell out of an SUV on Columbus’ east side Sunday afternoon.

According to a Columbus police dispatcher, officers responded to a pedestrian struck call in the area of East 5th and St. Clair avenues at approximately 3:18 p.m.

At the scene, officers found the child — 7-year-old Zondeair Robertson — suffering from injuries. He was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead at 3:57 p.m.

According to Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua, several children were riding in the backseat of a 2020 Ford Explorer when the passenger door opened and Robertson fell out. Robertson was then run over by the Explorer.

Fuqua said police are investigating how the door was opened and if the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

“This isn’t victim blaming, but it’s important to know that when you are traveling with young children, to always make sure that they’re secured in a seat belt or a car seat or some type of restraint, as well as if you have the opportunity to have child safety locks on your back doors to activate them when possible,” he said.

The driver of the SUV was arrested on an unrelated warrant; it is not known if any further charges will be filed in relation to Sunday’s incident.
