LAS VEGAS (WCMH) – Las Vegas Metropolitan Police buried a fallen K-9 with full police honors on Wednesday.
KSNV reported that Nicky, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, was shot accidentally by an officer on March 31 while police were investigating a double murder.
“Just two months after surviving a brutal stabbing, police dog Nicky was fatally shot while attempting to subdue a murder suspect,” police said. “Not to be lost in this story, is the fact that two people were senselessly murdered at the scene. Speaking to local media, neighbors credit police action for preventing further individuals from being harmed.”
Sgt. Eric Kerns, Nicky’s handler told KSNV that he and Nicky were “perfect partners.”
“My family is grateful for the courage of what that dog that allowed me to do that job day after day without being seriously injured and I will always be grateful for that.”
The police department released photos of Nicky’s funeral, and a video of other K-9s barking a farewell salute.
