COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Columbus Police say the man who was traveling the wrong direction on U.S. 33 before going the wrong way onto an on-ramp and causing a fatal accident was likely impaired at the time of the crash.
63-year-old Betty Griggs died as a result of the crash. Her daughter-in-law, Amanda Griggs, was taken to Grant Medical Center and remains in critical condition. Amanda’s two children were taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, although conditions of minors are not released.
CPD’s Accident Investigation Unit said they’re still trying to figure out how and why 41-year-old Richard Hough drove the wrong direction before the fatal accident but they do believe he was impaired.
“He showed signs of impairment. His demeanor, his behavior, his appearance all gave us probable cause that impairment may be a factor in this crash,” says Sgt. Brooke Wilson of Columbus Police.
Sgt. Wilson adds that marijuana was found in Hough’s SUV and at last check, he was in stable condition.
