COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Grandview Heights Police are investigating after a single-vehicle fatal crash early Wednesday morning.

Police and medics were called to the intersection of Dublin Road and West Fifth Avenue around 4:15am.

After the crash, the car caught on fire.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, who has been identified as 36-year-old Elizabeth Edwards of Columbus, was killed in the crash. Police say the car was spotted going at a high speed, estimated to be around 100 miles per hour. Police believe the car hit the railroad tracks before flipping and being engulfed.

Sergeant Ryan Starns of Grandview Heights Police Department says it appears “she went into some sort of an embankment and may have gone airborne at that time.”

Police say Edwards was driving a rental car and it took officers quite some to investigate whether or not another person was in the car.

“There was so much damage on the vehicle that we just wanted to make sure before we released any of those details there was contents within the car that could have suggested a second person being in there,” Sergeant Starns tells NBC4.

Police say the investigation is far from over. “You know obviously we want to find out why if there is a reason at all that this individual was traveling at such a high speed down 5th avenue, you know, was it was somebody chasing her?” Starns says. “We’re not just focusing on the fact that we have somebody traveling at a high rate of speed and they end up crashing there’s got to be a reason for it so we’re going to look into that.”
