AUSTIN (WCMH/KXAN) – Police say a man in Texas stole credit cards to stock up on a near-unlimited supply of chicken nuggets and waffle fries by purchasing $9,000 worth of gift cards.

Austin police arrested David Ricketts, 26, after discovering he used forged information and credit cards to purchase thousands of dollars worth of Chick Fil’A gift cards, KXAN-TV reports.

Ricketts was arrested May 6 after a call came in at 7pm from an Autin Chick Fil’A. Employees said a man was using stolen credit cards to purchase an abnormal amount of gift cards. Upon arrival, Ricketts was immediately pointed out to police by the employees.

While police investigated the restaurant, Ricketts informed the officers he had irritable bowel syndrome and needed to use the restroom. Officers told the suspect they wanted to search him first to ensure he could not dispose of any evidence. Ricketts’ wallet was confiscated by officers who walked him over the restroom. Police noted in the affidavit Ricketts “was very concerned [officers] had his wallet.”

Officers reviewed the names on the credit cards and drivers licence in the wallet while Ricketts used the bathroom. They discovered the name on the cards did not match the name Ricketts had given them despite the photo on the driver’s license matching his face. When Ricketts returned police once again asked what his name was. The affidavit says “he stated David Ricketts.”

Police then asked why he had a driver’s license and five credit cards with another man’s name on them. Ricketts told officers he didn’t know why he had the cards and that they were not his. He was handcuffed by police and placed in a patrol car while investigators searched the bathroom.

In the toilet seat cover holder police found 20 Chick Fil’A gift cards. Officers noted that no one had used the bathroom after Ricketts. Employees told police he had asked to purchase 10 $100 gift cards. The first credit card Ricketts used was declined, but the second one was approved. After the successful transaction, he then bought 10 more $100 gift cards. There was a total of $2,000 gift cards found.

Checking the ID of the man named on the cards, police could not find a match. However, investigators did discover Ricketts bought an additional $7,000 in gift cards from the same Chick Fil’A on May 4. The store said Ricketts large purchase of gift cards led to a new store policy requiring a photo ID when buying numerous gift cards.

So how much chicken would $9,000 buy at Chick-fil-A? Even if Ricketts were to purchase the large version of every item on the menu, plus each kid’s meal, he’d still have about $8,750 left to spend, or enough for 35 more visits buying everything on the menu, credit.com reports.

Ricketts faces forgery and credit card abuse charges. He is being held on a $15,000 bond. What others are clicking on:
