COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio Senate passed a bill Wednesday designating Sept. 19 as Stillbirth Prevention Day in Ohio.

Senate Bill 207 is an effort to raise awareness for mothers who have experienced that loss.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, in 2020, 750 babies were lost to stillbirth in the state. Between 2010 and 2019, the state averaged 6.4 fetal deaths per 1,000 live births.

Ohio Sen. Stephanie Kunze (R-Dublin) talked about NBC4’s Jennifer Bullock’s effort to raise awareness through Miles Mission.

“It’s a very interesting, I think, and meaningful name for this effort,” Kunze said. “Miles actually means, the definition can mean soldier or soldiering on, or going the distance or the extra mile, and that is what this is designed to do. We introduced the bill to raise awareness so that other Ohio families have the opportunity to know that they’re not alone.”

The bill now moves to the Ohio House for consideration.
