COLUMBUS (WCMH) – David Smith can do just about anything with the tools you’d find in a typical kitchen.
His business, Frost Lion Ice Plus, creates sculptures from ice, sand, fruit, chocolate and yes – pumpkins.
Smith stopped by NBC4 Today Sunday to share some of his secrets to pumpkin carving.
The unique way he carves pumpkins has some perks over the traditional method:
- Start by shaving off the rind.
- Then use a brillo pad to smooth the surface of the pumpkin.
- Once it’s smooth, you have a blank canvas to create any design
Smith recommends using coloring pages as a stencil if you’re doing this with kids.
The best part of carving pumpkins this way is there’s no need to take the pulp out from the inside.
It’s less mess to clean up afterwards.
Rick Petersen of Johnstown grew the giant pumpkin Smith brought to the NBC4 studios.
