COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Protesters took over a Columbus City Council meeting Monday night, saying that a list of demands they presented to the council last week were not met.
The protesters kneeled during the singing of the national anthem. As the council began its regular agenda, a few protesters interrupted with chants, with more joining in, as Council President Zach Klein asked them to follow the rules.
Some of the protesters took over the meeting, walking up onto the council dais and chanting, “Let’s take a knee for Tyre.”
“We stand adjourned,” Klein said. Council members walked out.
The police gave protesters five minutes to leave, so they took their protest outside City Hall.
“They should have sat and listened and let us speak what we had to speak, let us have a sit-in, have a knee for Tyre,” said Hana Abdur-Rahim, a protester.
Tammy Fournier-Alsaada of the People’s Justice Project spoke to a crowd of protesters.
“We had to shut this meeting down because we’ve been begging, we’ve been coming patiently, we’ve been working with, we’ve been listening to, and we’re tired,” Fournier-Alsaada said.
Inside, the meeting resumed and the council finished its agenda. Afterward, names of people who had signed up to speak were read, but many of them were protesters who had not come back to the meeting.
NBC4 spoke to Council President Klein after the meeting concluded.
“We did get interrupted by folks who were upset and I shared their frustration that they feel like sometimes things don’t go as fast as they want,” Klein said.
Klein said he made the decision to adjourn the meeting for the safety of council member and others in the council chambers.
“I think this is a very important topic and we should do things together to figure out how we can move the ball forward and how we can be more transparent, be more accountable and always seek justice for every family in the city of Columbus,” Klein said.
Columbus police referred NBC4 back to City Council for comment.
