CLEVELAND (WCMH) – Protesters are already demonstrating two days ahead of the Republican National Convention.
On Saturday afternoon, activists supporting Black Lives Matter, as well as members of the New Black Panther Party, demonstrated in downtown Cleveland. There was a heavy police presence as hundreds of people marched through the streets, ending peacefully at a police substation.
“There’s no doubt about that their idea of ‘Make America Great Again’ doesn’t include people like me,” said Bobby Price from the New Black Panther Party.
He said Donald Trump and the Republican Party aren’t addressing systematic racism.
“Here it is we are about to elect a president, who a good part of his base are racists, white supremacists who don’t see America as I see it. I see America as being all America not just some America,” said Price.
But Price, along with many others, don’t necessarily support Hillary Clinton either.
“We as black people need to have demands on the table, first and foremost,” said protester Iffat Walker. “These candidates are asking for the black vote, then what are you doing for the black community?”
“I’m all about peace and love. I’m definitely not about hate, because hate attracts hate,” said protester Melisa Collins. “I’m hoping they’re safe this weekend. I’m hoping the words that Donald Trump chooses to use are productive. I’m hoping that he’s one day going to be one of those people who realizes what he’s doing is counterproductive.”
Thousands of more people are expected to arrive in Cleveland to protest, ahead of the RNC beginning on Monday. What others are clicking on:
