OTTOWA, Ohio (WCMH)–Putnam County Sheriff Michael Chandler died early Wednesday morning after complications from surgery, NBC24 reports. 

Chandler had been sheriff in Putnam County, which is north of Lima, since 2013. He was 56. The sheriff’s office did not say why he was undergoing surgery.

Lieutenant David E. Roney was appointed interim sheriff. NBC24 said Roney will oversee administrative duties and operations of the sheriff’s office and adult detention facility until someone can be appointed to complete Chandler’s term.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
