COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–Four fires in a 24-hour period on Wednesday stretched resources for the Red Cross of Central Ohio.

Those fires included two major apartments where dozens of people needed help.

NBC4 talked with the Red Cross of Central Ohio about their needs.

Red Cross volunteers helped 53 people in need during those four fires, and say they need help.

Spokesperson Whitney Somerville said they have three major needs that people can help with.

“There are several ways you can give, you can give financially, you can also give blood and you can volunteer,” said Somerville.

Volunteers are trained to help out in disasters like Wednesday’s fires, and she said they also need to be ready to go at a minutes notice.

“These volunteers get up in the middle of the night to respond to these home fires and they give of their time. We call them everyday heroes,” Somerville said.

Those back-to-back fires also show the need for constant recruiting.

“When there are four home fires at once we have to make sure we have active volunteer teams ready and on the standby. That is why we are always recruiting for more people to get involved,” she said.

On Friday Red Cross volunteers will be installing free smoke detectors in 350 homes in the Linden area.
