SAN DIEGO (WCMH)–A sea lion pup found in an upscale San Diego restaurant in February was released back into the ocean on Wednesday.

The pup, nicknamed “Marina,” was malnourished, and spent two months rehabilitating at SeaWorld San Diego. A video shared on Tuesday shows Marina return to the ocean after being fully rehabilitated.

“When Marina was rescued, she was extremely malnourished and dehydrated and weighed only 20 pounds,” SeaWorld wrote on its website. “In fact, she was considered a ‘micro pup,’ meaning she weighed half of what would be considered a healthy sea lion pup. Marina also suffered from an unknown eye injury.

“Following eight weeks of veterinary and rehabilitative care from the experts at SeaWorld San Diego, Marina has been nursed back to health, making this an exciting recovery for everyone involved. Her eye has healed, she has gained more than 25 pounds and is now at a healthy weight, and she has demonstrated the ability to forage for food on her own! That means she was ready to be released back in to her ocean home.”

After two months of rehabilitation at our park’s Animal Rescue Center, the sea lion pup nicknamed “Marina” (rescued on Feb. 4, 2016 at the iconic Marine Room restaurant) was returned to her ocean home on Tuesday, April 5, 2016! Taking part in the return of Marina was Jody, SeaWorld’s stranded animal coordinator who rescued Marina as well as @chefbernardguillas, the executive chef of the @themarineroom restaurant who visited the sea lion several times during her rehabilitation here at SeaWorld. Rescued weighing only 20 pounds, the extremely malnourished and dehydrated sea lion was considered a “micro pup,” meaning she weighed half the weight she should for her age. She also suffered from an unknown eye injury. Following eight weeks of veterinary and rehabilitative care, Marina has been nursed back to health, her eye healed, gained more than 25 pounds, and demonstrated the ability to forage for food on her own.  All are keys to being able to successfully survive in the wild. The man who found Marina, chef Bernard Guillas, was there to send her off. SeaWorld said Guillas and other employees of The Marine Room restaurant came to visit the little sea lion while she was recovering.
